In the days under Soviet rule, Czechoslovakia was afforded less freedom than most other Eastern and Central European countries, and very few – if any – private businesses or transactions were allowed to be carried out. Property was impossible to get hold of for anyone bar the state. Since the fall of Communism and the split into Slovakia and the Czech Republic things have opened up far more, with property in cities such as Prague becoming incredibly popular with foreigners. It is now relatively straightforward for a foreign national to purchase off plan property in the country. It should be noted that as a former Communist state, the Czech Republic is subject to the same potential pitfalls as other former Soviet countries and all land titles should be checked in detail to ensure legality of ownership, as reclamations can be lost and confused over time.
